50 Story Prompts for Documenting the Back To School or a Return to Routine in September!

September often feels like a transition month. Summer starts winding down, routines shift, and the pace of everyday life changes as school, work, activities, and new schedules settle in. It’s a month filled with fresh starts, familiar routines, and plenty of little moments worth documenting.

That’s the idea behind this month’s Story Foundations prompt list. September includes 50 story and photo prompts inspired by back-to-school season, changing routines, fall beginnings, and everyday life. There’s no expectation to use every prompt or document every day. Instead, think of this list as a collection of ideas you can pick and choose from throughout the month.

Some prompts focus on the back-to-school transition, while others are simply about noticing what’s happening in your life right now. You’ll find ideas for documenting routines, learning, projects, accomplishments, favorite everyday things, and the small changes that come with a new season.

The goal is to help you capture this particular moment in time, whether September means school drop-offs and new supplies, a return to familiar routines, or simply the first hints of fall. These everyday details help tell the story of where you were, what you were doing, and what life looked like during this season.

Shayla - “A Meal Packed or Prepared ” using the Summer Camp Collection

Summer is coming to a close but the prompt “A Meal Packed Or Prepared” reminded me of all the great BBQ meals we’ve had. I chose a couple of photos of a smoked ribs supper and then used the Summer Camp collection to scrap them. I used several papers diagonally in a striped pattern. Then I layered a journal card and one of the digital frames for my photos. I used the pinwheel paper flowers and wood discs for my clusters. This layout came together so quickly, especially when using a prompt as a starting point.

Melinda - “A Moment Worth Documenting” using the Story Foundations: Routines

I love these pick a prompt lists that Traci has been sharing each month - it’s a great place to start when you don’t know what you want to do!

I chose the “a moment worth documenting” prompt because if the wedding of one of your besties isn’t worth documenting then what is?! And, their first wedding anniversary is this month so it felt like perfect timing too!

I’ve used mostly Story Foundations - Chapter 1: Routines because I felt like the illustrations were a perfect match to the way her wedding day felt. I did find it pretty funny that a collection designed for routines worked so perfectly for something that is definitely NOT a routine, every day event!

Hanna - “Something You’re Looking Forward To” using the Anywhere But Here

I hardly ever do photoless layouts, but the prompt “Something you’re looking forward to” made me think of our upcoming vacation. We’re planning a road trip to Denmark and so used the Anywhere But Here collection. The Alpha really spoke to me, so I chose to only use the neutral colors that match it. I wanted to use the alpha as 2D and made sure to tweak the blending layers and play with the blend mode as well. It looks more like a printed stamp that way. Finishing it off, I used only the green pink and yellow ellies, some of which I recolored. I love how this turned out!
