50 Story Prompts for Documenting Spooky Season in October!

October is a month with plenty to document. Fall is settling in, Halloween brings its own traditions and activities, and everyday life starts to take on a different rhythm. From changing leaves and cozy evenings to costumes, decorations, and seasonal treats, there are stories everywhere.

That’s the idea behind this month’s Story Foundations prompt list. October includes 50 story and photo prompts inspired by fall, Halloween, seasonal traditions, and everyday life. There’s no expectation to use every prompt or document every day. Instead, think of this list as a collection of ideas you can pick and choose from throughout the month.

Some prompts focus on the fun and spooky parts of October, while others encourage you to document the quieter details of the season. You’ll find ideas for decorations, favorite foods, fall activities, memories, creative projects, and those little seasonal moments that help capture what October looked like in your life.

The goal is to help you document October beyond the obvious highlights. The costumes and celebrations are fun to remember, but so are the cozy nights, changing scenery, familiar traditions, and everyday details that make this time of year feel like yours.

Need some inspiration for how to incorporate these prompts into your memory keeping? The TRD team picked a few prompts that inspired them and created pages!

Hanna - “A Small Seasonal Joy” using the Jack & Skelly Collection

I picked [A small seasonal joy] as my prompt. It immediately made me think of this photographed moment by my BFF. Over here (in the Netherlands) Halloween is not really a thing though it is becoming more popular. Her son had seen pumpkin carving and really wanted to try it. So they did, with some friends from school and it was such a happy moment and he was so proud. And rightly so.

The Jack & Skelly collection is one of my favorites, maybe because orange is a color I really love (I even have a nearly fully orange guest room). So it was perfect for this layout. I picked the accordion flowers and they inspired me to put lots of them on the page with differented elements as accents. The bats banner seemed such a fun idea and I tweaked some of the wordarts in the kit to make a suitable title. This is such a fun and sweet memory, the layout really focusses on that. Love the end result!

Becky - “A Harvest Inspired Moment” using the Cider Season Collection

When I saw the prompt ‘A harvest inspired moment’ I immediately knew that I wanted to record one of my many jelly making sessions this year. We have had a bumper crop of apples and have made SO many jars of jelly and yes, it was jelly I made rather than jam which are two different types of preserves here in the UK! As I was thinking of which collection to use I remembered that Cider Season has a very ‘apple’ theme running through it so decided to go with that! It is funny for us in the UK as cider is always an alcoholic apple drink! I bumped up quite a few of the pieces on foam pads to give dimension and added some stenciling to my background white card stock to look like I had splashed jam onto the paper.

Luly - “Pick a Halloween Memory from the Past” using the Haunting Collection

The Prompt I chose was Pick a Halloween memory from the past - and it was perfect to continue working on my Halloween Through the Years album that I started last year.  This is the perfect project because I get to use all my favorite Halloween collections!

I used Traci’s Haunting Collection to document some of the fun pics over the years. I am using a TN sized album - so I get to use all the fun TN papers that Traci creates for each collection. Do you know that Traci also has some fabulous freebie cut files on her website? I have downloaded this BooEEK cut file for ever and I finally cut it out! To make it even more fun - I attached this to the outside of a page protector and made it a full size shaker.

I also love to resize the stickers and embellishments to fit the smaller sized travelers notebook album. I documented a few different pics  - 1994/1995?, 1998, 2018 and 2021. Its random and I love it.  Don’t let chronology keep you from documenting your memories.
