Inspired by Quilts: Scrap a Log Cabin-Style Scrapbook Page!

For this month’s Story Foundations project, I chose the prompt, “What does home mean to me in this season?” I liked that it pushed me beyond simply creating a fall layout and made me think about what home actually looks and feels like in our everyday life right now.

I realized pretty quickly that my answer wasn’t really about my house at all. It was about all the ordinary things happening inside and around it.

Home in this season looks like football on the TV, something warm in the oven, dogs underfoot and time with family. It looks like neighborhood walks, changing leaves, pretty sunsets, time outside, and plenty of everyday moments along the way. Nothing earth shattering. Nothing that would normally warrant its own scrapbook page. But put them all together, and they tell a pretty good story of what life looks like right now.

So here’s my invitation to you this month: What does home look and feel like in this season of your life? Not necessarily the holidays or milestones or big events — but the little things that make up your days and make home feel like home.

When I began thinking about a design for this story, I found a sketch foundation that immediately reminded me of a log cabin quilt pattern. If you’re familiar with log cabin quilts, you know they’re constructed by adding strips around a center block, building outward a piece at a time. That felt particularly fitting for a story about home, and gave me a great starting point for my layout.

I pulled several papers from Story Foundations: Golden Days and arranged the strips by color, moving from the warmer reds and oranges into greens and blues. I loved being able to use so many of the patterns together without any one of them overwhelming the page. Much like a quilt, each little piece gets to contribute something to the overall design.

I chose one large photo of the four of us watching football together to anchor the center of the page. It’s not a beautifully posed photo from a special occasion. It’s just us, standing in the kitchen in our football jerseys on a Sunday afternoon — which made it exactly the kind of photo I wanted for this story.

I built my title cluster beside it using the Cozy Fall title and then had fun layering in some of the fall icons — pumpkins, flowers, football, and leaves. I added the Golden Memories banner underneath because that really is what this page is about. Sometimes the most ordinary moments turn out to be the golden ones.

I carried the embellishments around the page with a large cluster of leaves in the upper right corner. I love how the leaves follow the direction of the paper strips and turn the corner, helping reinforce that framework around the photos.

And of course, if I was going to create a design inspired by a quilt, I couldn’t resist adding some stitching! I stitched along each of the paper strips, changing my thread color as the papers changed. I love the texture it adds, but I also love that the stitching makes those individual strips feel even more like pieces of a quilt coming together.

The collection made it easy to keep the embellishments focused on the season without losing sight of the everyday story I wanted to tell. The leaves, warm colors, football, pumpkins, and cozy cup all say fall, but they also support what was actually happening in my photos.

The two smaller photos underneath the main photo fill in a couple more pieces of the story — dogs underfoot and something warm in the oven. I kept my journaling fairly short because I wanted it to capture the feeling behind the photos rather than simply describe them:

Home in this season looks like football on the TV, something warm in the oven, dogs underfoot and time with family. It’s these cozy fall moments that make home feel less like a place and more like the life we’ve made here.

And I think that last sentence is really the heart of this page for me.

The more I worked on the layout, the more appropriate that log cabin quilt inspiration seemed. A quilt is made up of individual pieces that may not seem particularly important on their own, but together they become something bigger. Our everyday lives are much the same. A football game, a pie in the oven, a walk through the neighborhood, dogs playing on the patio — none of those moments feels especially significant while it’s happening. Together, though, they make up this season of our life.

I’d love to invite you to think about what those pieces are in your own life right now. Maybe it’s the people you share your home with, the routines you’ve settled into, the view from your window, the meals you make, the pets at your feet, or something you do every day without giving it much thought.

Because those everyday details do change. Our routines change. Our homes change. The people around us change. And the things that feel completely ordinary today may someday be exactly the things we want to remember.

Just like that log cabin quilt, it’s all those little pieces coming together that make the whole thing home.
