50 Story Prompts for Documenting the Outdoors in August!

August has a way of inviting us outside. Whether you're heading out on an adventure, relaxing in the backyard, taking an evening walk, or simply noticing the world around you, there's no shortage of stories waiting just beyond your front door.

That's the idea behind this month's Story Foundations prompt list. August includes 50 story and photo prompts inspired by the outdoors, everyday adventures, and the changing season. There's no expectation to use every prompt or document every day. Instead, think of this list as a flexible collection of ideas you can return to whenever you need a little inspiration.

Some prompts encourage you to explore somewhere new, while others invite you to slow down and notice the details that are easy to overlook. From favorite views and quiet moments in nature to outdoor gatherings and everyday walks, these prompts are designed to help you capture both the adventures and the ordinary moments that make this season memorable.

The goal is to help you document August as it really happened. Not just the vacations or special outings, but the fresh air, familiar places, changing landscapes, and everyday moments spent outside. Sometimes the best stories begin with simply stepping outdoors.

Laura - “An Outdoor Gathering or Event ” using the Moonlit Collection

This year I went to my local 4th of July celebration. Now I haven’t been since I we had a cannon that came from one of the military bases. We no longer have one, because of a portable potty incident. What you think happened, happened. The firework show did not disappoint, but during the day with vendors it was severely lack luster. I did have a great pulled pork sandwich though.

When I saw the Moonlit collection I knew I had to document the 4th of July celebration. I used one of the TN papers for the background. Added some star confetti on the left side. Before the fireworks we had a drone show which was cool. Afterwards walk over to the local hangout. A.k.a. Sonic. Still to this day it’s the local hangout. I used one of the frames from the collection to frame a couple of photos. I love these premade clusters.

Shayla - “An Outdoor Project or Activity” using the Story Foundations Collection

I used the “An Outdoor Project or Activity” prompt to guide my subject matter for this layout. Summer means all things garden for me and I’ve had an exceptionally good rhubarb harvest. My photo is showing off my rhubarb ‘umbrella’ and my journaling tells that story.

Now that there is 7 months worth of Story Foundations kits released, I’ve been excited to see how I can mix and match them. So, this layout actually uses at least one item from every Story Foundations kit so far. And it looks so cohesive!

Hanna - “A Collection of Things Found Outdoors” using the Story Foundations: Brighter Days Collection

This prompt made me think of little treasures and big moments. This “moonwalk” we did on the Channel Islands was something I had been looking forward too for months. On the day, the weather wasn’t great but it was such an adventure. We saw lots of creepy crawlies and learnt a lot and found some special stuff. I used a Bottoms Up template to scrap these photos using only a few ellies. Not a fan of journaling but made sure it was a highlight on the page here. Such an awesome time was had scrapping these memories!
