Photoshop In Five with Theresa: How To Create A Scalloped Insert

Hi friends, it’s Theresa here with another fun and super simple Photoshop In Five tutorial! Recently I created and shared a scalloped vellum and intro page for my August 2023 6x8 album. For this page I printed and cut the floral from the Hearth & Hollow collection printed onto vellum. I also used one of the patterned papers from My Oasis for the Introduction page for August.

Today I am going to create my first August story on the back of that scalloped page. I have a cool photo of the rain falling down on our back porch with the leaves beginning to fall, and I want to create a place to journal some thoughts about where we are right now at the end of summer. I am using papers and stickers from the Hearth & Hollow collection, which is perfect for this transitional time between summer and fall.

My tutorial today is how to create a scalloped page in Photoshop so that you can then bring it into the Silhouette for cutting.

  1. Open a blank template at least the size that you want to create your scalloped page. I keep a blank template for 7x8.25” layouts with two rectangles and guidelines set already in place.

  2. Using the Shape tool, draw a simple rectangle the size of the page you’d like to create and then draw 1” circles going across and down your page. Make sure the shapes are all filled with no stroke.

  3. Resize your rectangle to align with the centers of your circles around the page. You should now be able to see the shape of your page with scallops on the three edges.

  4. Select all of the shapes and right click in the Layer tool, then click Convert to Smart Object. All of your circles and your rectangle will now be one single shape.

  5. You can now clip your patterned paper to the scalloped page, save as a PNG, and bring into the Silhouette for printing and cutting. You can try this with lots of different shapes so have fun with it!
